Custodial history:

The records of the former Wesleyan Circuit (Acc. 1650, Acc. 1745 and Acc. 1857) were deposited by the Superintendent Minister of Congleton Circuit in March 1970, June 1971 and May 1975, and by the Second Minister in July 1972, and by the Circuit Archivist in February 1985. Those of the former Primitive Methodist Circuit (Acc. 1781 and Acc. 1800) were deposited by the Second Minister in November 1971 and February 1972. Records relating to individual chapels and societies have been placed in the series EMS. Copies of the 'Circuit Schedules' of deeds and documents not deposited are in the Accession File.

Administrative / biographical background:

An account of the development of Methodism in Congleton is given in 'Methodism in Congleton: A History of the Wagg Street and the Kinsey Street Circuits in Congleton and the surrounding Area' by Joan P. Alcock (1968). Dates of alteration in the Circuits are as follows:-

 

1943 - Congleton Queen Street (former Methodist New Connexion) Chapel tranferred from Burslem Circuit to Wagg Street Circuit.

 

1969 - Congleton Circuit formed from:-

 

Wagg Street (former Wesleyan) Circuit, except Biddulph section, which was transferred to Biddulph and Mow Cop Circuit.

 

Kinsey Street (former Primitive Methodist) Circuit, except Mow Cop and Newtown Chapels, which were transferred to Biddulph and Mow Cop Circuit, and Kent Green Chapel, which was transferred to Tunstall Circuit.
